Georgia: Agricultural COOP

Project #71949
Asia Church Planting Georgia (Republic)

Rural villages outside Gori, Georgia, are home to people representing many cultures. Primarily an agricultural area, the residents are economically poor and in need of spiritual transformation through Jesus Christ. A pastor and three deacons from an evangelical church in Gori own farms in three villages outside the city. Their desire is to use their farms as an avenue to take the gospel to these communities and plant churches where there is no church.

Often, much of their crops waste away in the fields because they cannot hire enough help, nor do they have the equipment needed to harvest and transport their produce to the markets. The farmers’ profit margin has been kept low and they do not have much time to devote to ministry.

Establishing an agricultural co-op to purchase a tractor, a transport vehicle, and other farm implements for sharing by the church leaders/farmers will make the farms more profitable and allow them to hire villagers to help work the farms. The success of the farms will also permit the farmers more time to devote to leading Bible studies and other ministry activities. As relationships are built with village residents, the gospel will be shared, and churches planted.

Already, a regular Bible study has been started in one of the villages with 18 people attending. The hope is to start new Bible study groups in other villages. This agricultural co-op will help these church leaders/farmers use the resources God has given them to build relationships with villagers and have opportunities to show the love of Christ.
