MMC: Proyecto LUME

Project #71951
Europe Media Spain (MMC)

Segovia, Spain, is a historical city, about a 30-minute train ride from Madrid. Buildings of faith display architecture dating back several centuries: Catholic cathedrals from the 1500s, some with influences from the previous period of the Muslim Moors, and remnants of Jewish Quarter synagogues pre-dating the 16th century.

But there’s more to the faith history of Segovia. Avant’s Málaga Media Center is ready to share the faith-filled stories of Segovian Protestants. Titled Lume: the flame is still alive, the documentary tells about the Protestant experience in Spain during the first part of the 20th century and the oppressive years under dictatorship, and how it continues today.

Spain has been a country steeped in Catholicism for centuries. But Spaniards under the age of 40 have rejected the traditional religion of the country – and Christianity. Because of the political involvement and sometimes abusive power of their cultural church, young people are turning their backs on religion, God, and everything connected to “church.”

Project Lume includes interviews of elderly believers and a review of historical documents to show Christianity in a way totally unknown to the average Spaniard. These eyewitness accounts about what sustained them through difficult times is a powerful witness to a faith in contrast to their traditional religion. The film is targeted at Spaniards who have rejected Christianity as they know it and challenges them to be open to real faith in the true Jesus.
