Church Planting in Italy

Church Planting Europe Italy Long Term

Sicily, one of Italy’s 20 regions, is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. Though 71% of Sicilians identify as Roman Catholic, only 20% participate in mass regularly. Instead of going to church, their spirituality is expressed through superstition.

Avant is recruiting a team to plant a new church near Catania, a city known for its youth culture and liberal lifestyle. Young people view religion as a quaint part of their cultural heritage, expressing skepticism toward tradition. Less than 1% of the population of Sicily is evangelical.

The primary ministry platform developed by missionaries in Sicily is Fusion Athletics, a sports association that shares the gospel through the fun of athletics. By leveraging the local church, the team will increase its momentum. Team members should enjoy physical activity. Skills and experience in baseball, softball, running, and/or soccer are especially valued.

We need motivated individuals who are social and enjoy crowds. The typical occasion for sharing the gospel is one-on-one while eating a pizza in a crowded piazza at 11:30 p.m. on a Saturday night.

The island boasts natural beauty in beaches, mountains, volcanoes and forests as well as the most crystalline water in the world. Yet, it does have its challenges. Learning Italian can be difficult, and one can expect to invest 18 months learning the culture and the language. Be ready for intense discussions about the gospel with the vibrant and often confrontational Sicilians.

There is an urgent need on this team for long term missionaries (5+ years).
