Faithful Under Pressure
Tammy* is part of one of Avant’s new church plants in Asia. Together with other local believers, she is following Jesus and sharing the hope of the gospel with those in her community. But in her country, following Christ can come at a cost.
It wasn't a surprise when the officials showed up at Tammy’s door and asked to speak with her about her religious activities. Although freedom of religion is included in the country's constitution, the reality is that many people face pressure and persecution because of their faith in Jesus.
Pressure to Be Silent
The officials came to ask Tammy to sign a statement saying she would no longer share her faith with others or encourage them to become followers of Jesus. But Tammy could not agree to those terms. Instead, she submitted a signed statement saying she would not do anything illegal.
All seemed well until Tammy received a call from a higher-ranking government official. She was told she had to come to the station immediately and sign a statement saying she would no longer be part of any church.
Choosing Faithfulness
Tammy worried about the implications of declining to sign. How would it affect her family and her relationship with her unbelieving husband? How would it affect her church? Would her decision impact the church’s ability to register with the local government?
Despite these concerns, Tammy knew she couldn't sign the statement. She was committed to Christ and to her brothers and sisters in her church. One of the local pastors encouraged her to do what was right and trust God with the consequences.
The government officials took note of Tammy’s refusal. She would not agree to stop being part of her church or living out her faith.
A Story Still Unfolding
Later that week, Tammy woke early one morning before the sun rose and spent time praying. She said, “I woke at 3 am and I knew that God will be with me. It's not going to be easy, it's going to be very hard, but God is with me.”
Tammy's story is still unfolding. While she has chosen to take a stand for her faith and remain faithful to Christ, the long-term consequences of her decision are not yet known. As she continues to navigate pressure from government officials, she needs wisdom, courage, and strength from God for whatever lies ahead.
Today, we invite you to pray for Tammy and for all those who face persecution for the sake of the gospel. Pray that they would remain steadfast in their faith, strengthened by the presence of Christ, and encouraged by the global body of believers.
