Introducing a Friend to a Friend

The stories we celebrate often begin with dramatic conversations or life-changing decisions. Yet many times, God's work unfolds quietly through ordinary friendships, patient prayer, and steady love. Sometimes our role is simply to walk faithfully alongside someone as God does His work.

Luis serves with Avant in Spain. He shared this story about friendship and God's work in one man's life. Names have been changed to protect privacy.

Holy Week

The Holy Week processions had begun. My friend Elena* invited Daniel* and me to experience this important tradition in Spanish culture. Amid all the noise and excitement, I heard Daniel say, “This doesn’t make any sense.”

“Aren’t you Catholic?” I asked him.

He replied that he didn’t believe in those traditions. He didn’t believe in the church, and sometimes he even doubted God’s existence.

I shared my faith with him and even dared to invite him to church, but he hesitated and avoided the conversation. I decided not to pressure him and simply kept praying for him.

Five Months Later

Five months later, Daniel and I went to the city fair. I was about to leave that night when he said to me, “Tomorrow is Sunday. Stay—you don’t have to get up early to do anything important.”

I replied, “I want to go to church.”

Daniel fell silent. Then he pulled me aside and said, “Would it be okay if I went with you?”

I didn’t understand it. Where had this interest come from?

Sunday Morning

The next day, Daniel stood outside the church wondering whether to go in. He finally did. From that day on, he has never missed a service.

He felt loved by the church. I took time to disciple him, and he placed his faith in Jesus. One day he told me:

“I don’t know why you’re the way you are but never change your character. Many people tried to talk to me about God over the years, often condemning me. But the only reason I eventually decided to come to church with you was because of your friendship. You never pressured me or placed conditions on me. I thank God because He used your friendship to help me come to know Him.”

When I heard those words, I felt joy unlike anything I had ever experienced. All glory to God!

Celebrating New Life

I felt that same joy again when I watched Daniel come up out of the water after being baptized. God is faithful. I’m thankful He allowed me to witness His work in Daniel’s life.

• Pray for the friendships God has placed in your life, asking Him to use you to faithfully point others to Jesus while trusting Him to do the work in their hearts.
